Tips from Madrid

How to meet people in Madrid?

Are you new to Madrid? Perhaps you want to meet someone for a beer or coffee whilst also practicing your Spanish? But you have no idea where to start? Here are some hints and tips to help you meet new people, both native Spaniards and international folks!

  • Language school

Not only are language schools one of the best ways to dramatically improve your Spanish, but also they provide you with a great opportunity to meet people from all around the world. As you all have the mutual interest to learn the Spanish language, after class you can practice speaking together, correcting one another as you go and even practice what you have just learnt in class!

  • Social media groups

Do you have Facebook? If the answer is yes, then you have no excuse. Just type “Madrid” into the Facebook search bar and you will be amazed at how many groups come up. There are groups for Au Pairs, Erasmus students, sporty people, political people… the list is endless. Start searching for people with similar interests to you now!

  • Language exchanges

Do you want to practice your Spanish or English? Language exchanges (intercambios) are a perfect way to practice your Spanish in the evenings with a native speaker, and you can return the favour by speaking to them in some English. These events are also very popular with Erasmus students, au pairs and travellers, so it’s another great way to meet more diverse range of people. Every Thursday there is a Meet & Speak at the Soho Club @8.30pm (Plaza Espana 6, 2nd floor) and at Larios Café every Thursday @7pm onwards, as well as the popular destination, the Beer Station. Check out citylifemadrid.com for more information.

  • Apps

Another great way to meet new people is via apps such as ‘MeetUp’ and ‘Party with a Local,’ but also don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone; Why not try dating apps such as Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble? (this is also a great way to meet locals!)

  • Tapas bars/ pub crawls

If you like to party and want to try tapas, pub crawls are a perfect way to make new friends. However, if you don’t fancy moving between bars, I would recommend staying in the barrios of La Latina, Malasaña, Chueca as there are many cool bars (and young people!).  But if you’re only interested in meeting native Spaniards you must go to La Calle Ponzano (Chamberi), a street lined with tapas bars and cocktail hot spots. It is now so popular that the term #ponzaning is on heavy rotation on social media.

  • Outdoor exercise classes

Exercise classes aren’t just limited to gyms. There are many outdoor classes e.g. boxercising, running groups, as well as roller skating, a sport which is very popular in Madrid´s main park, Retiro.

Hopefully now you have the knowledge and confidence to go out and meet the people of Madrid. Your best friend is waiting right around the corner so there is no time like the present. ¡Venga!
