Rooftops on institutional buildings
The roof terrace of the Círculo de Bellas Artes is one of our favourite terraces. It is only 5 minutes from our school, and you can see the whole of Madrid from there: Plaza de Cibeles, Gran Vía and practically all the famous buildings in the city. Upstairs there is an artificial grass area where you can sit and have a drink with friends or your partner. Very pleasant and with great views! The inside of the building is also beautiful, with ballrooms that look like a palace. In fact, the Círculo de Bellas Artes is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest and is part of the Landscape of Light (World Heritage since 2021). One drawback? You have to pay €5 to get in.
⌚ Opening hours: 10am to 1am (except on Fridays, Saturdays, and the eve of public holidays, when it is open until 1.30am).
📍 Address: 42 Alcalá Street.
Very close to the Círculo de Bellas Artes there is another roof terrace that is worth a visit if you want to enjoy Madrid’s beautiful sunsets. It is located in the Centro Centro building, in Plaza de Cibeles. This building is currently owned by Madrid City Council. Inside, there are many art exhibitions and open-air cinema screenings in summer (under a glass dome and with headphones to listen to the films, very curious!). On the top floor, there is a terrace/viewpoint with a 360º panoramic view. From there you can see many of Madrid’s most emblematic buildings, and the viewpoint itself provides maps with the names and brief histories of these places. 🙌 However, the passes only last 30 minutes, and you have to pay an entrance fee of 3 euros to get in.
Roof terraces in hotels / hostels
Unlike the previous two, The Hat is not located inside a publicly owned or cultural building. The Hat is accessed through a hostel with the same name; this is because it is actually the hostel’s restaurant but, as it has become so popular, anyone can go up to its terrace, whether they are hosted there or not. It is very close to the Plaza Mayor (2 minutes walk). Access is free and you can have lunch or dinner for about 10-20 euros. The menu also offers typical Spanish food such as tortilla pinchos, salmorejo cordobés, or bread with tomato and cured ham. On this rooftop terrace you will have very nice views (brown roofs and some very famous church domes) of the city.
⌚ Opening hours: Open every day, from 12 to 00h.
📍 Address: 9 Imperial Street.
The most famous rooftop in Madrid is undoubtedly the one at the RIU Hotel in Plaza de España. It became very popular after its inauguration because of the transparent walkway that was placed on the roof, where many people want to take pictures and get the feeling of being so high up (117 metres). It is only suitable for the bravest! The rooftop has also been used for filming scenes of famous Spanish TV series, such as ‘Élite‘, which has also contributed to its fame. Access to the rooftop costs 5 euros from Monday to Friday from 11am to 5pm, and 10 euros if you go up between 5 p.m. and 12 midnight; on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the entrance fee is 10 euros (regardless of the time of day). There is also a gastrobar upstairs where you can have something to eat or drink.
⌚ Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday the roof terrace is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. (with entry allowed until midnight). On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays the opening hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. (with entry allowed until 1am).
📍 Address: 84 Calle Gran Vía.
The RT60 is the rooftop terrace of the Hard Rock Hotel in Plaza de Atocha in Madrid. It is located on the eighth floor of the hotel and has 360º views of the city; from there you can see the Plaza de Atocha, the Reina Sofia Museum and the rooftops of the Arganzuela neighbourhood in Madrid. One thing we love is that sometimes you can listen to live DJ’s playing music there. They also have a wide variety of signature cocktails and food to enjoy while you contemplate the views.
⌚ Opening hours: From 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. every day.
📍 Address: 17 Ronda de Atocha.
Le Tavernier is the sea-inspired rooftop terrace of the Hotel INNSiDE by Meliá Madrid. It is a very large rooftop (500 metres) and very centrally located, right in the heart of Gran Vía. Being such a big place, Le Tavernier has several spaces with different atmospheres, although everything revolves around the stage where musicians of all styles often play. As its owners are from La Coruña (in the north of Spain), its aesthetics are inspired by the sea and you can try many dishes of Galician gastronomy, and there are also cocktails! Without a doubt, Le Tavernier is one of our favourite places to eat, have a drink in the evening and enjoy the best views of Madrid.
⌚ Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, open from 16h to 00h. Thursday and Friday, from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturdays, from 13h to 1:00h. Sundays, from 1 p.m. to, 00h.
📍 Address: 13 Mesonero Romanos.
If you are looking for a more elegant option, you will like Dani Brasserie. It is the rooftop of one of the most luxurious hotels in Madrid. This five-star hotel is on Gran Vía, just 5 minutes from Puerta del Sol. Specifically, on its terrace you can enjoy haute cuisine dishes with classic recipes and other more modern ones based on dishes from Andalusian gastronomy. The cocktails are signature and the food is named after Daniel García, a Spanish chef with two Michelin stars. But be prepared with your wallet, because it’s a bit pricey! 🙈
⌚ Opening hours: Every day, from 1 p.m. to midnight.
📍 Address: 3 Sevilla Street.
Roofs with vegetation
The rooftop terrace of El Viajero is located in the heart of La Latina neighbourhood, in front of the Mercado de la Cebada. It overlooks the neighbourhood and the San Francisco El Grande Basilica. El Viajero is a tapas restaurant where you can eat a variety of food, Spanish and from other places: from calamari sandwiches to fish and chips or Mexican tacos. The average price is around 20 euros and they also have vegetarian options. What we like most about this terrace is its decoration among plants, it’s a very nice place from which to watch the sunset in Madrid. 💗 And you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from many places to continue the after-dinner party (Cava Baja and Cava Alta)!
⌚ Opening hours: Tuesday and Wednesday, open from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. From Thursday to Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. (closed on Mondays).
📍 Address: 11 Plaza de la Cebada.
We love Salvador Bachiller’s terrace! It is located on the top floor of an accessories shop on Montera street in Madrid. Walking down this street and only seeing the establishment from the outside, you would never imagine that you would find something like this inside. It is a small garden decorated with a multitude of plants where you can have a snack or a cocktail in the evening. Drinks are served on plates and in glasses of very nice aesthetics, which you can also buy downstairs in the shop. In addition to this outdoor garden, they have another air-conditioned garden and a pleasantly decorated tearoom.
Please note: there is a minimum of 5 euros for a drink! Although in this place even a tea costs that much… 😂
⌚ Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday open from 11 a.m. to midnight. Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
📍 Address: 37 Calle de la Montera.
Roof terraces with swimming pool
Finally, we recommend the rooftop terrace of the Room Mate Óscar Hotel for summer. This hotel is located in Chueca, just 5 minutes walk from the school! This roof terrace with swimming pool has one of the best views of Madrid. Apart from this, it has a solarium where you can get tanned while sunbathing and a 360-degree viewpoint. It is undoubtedly one of the best places to watch the sunset in the city and enjoy the taste of a delicious cocktail (they have more than 30 on their menu!).
⌚ Opening hours: Monday to Thursday, from 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays, from 4:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Saturdays and holidays, from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sundays, from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.
